Automatically strips UTM tracking parameters and marketing tags from copied URLs before you paste them, protecting your privacy

UTMBeGone screenshot showing the app interface

UTMBeGone silently removes tracking parameters — UTM tags, affiliate identifiers, and other marketing query strings — from links copied to the clipboard. When a user copies a URL containing parameters such as utm_source, utm_campaign, or fbclid, the app rewrites the clipboard entry with those fields stripped before the link is pasted. (Free)

The app ships with a default set of common tracking tags and allows users to add or remove parameters as needed. This means URLs shared via messaging apps, email, or documents no longer carry analytics identifiers that reveal the sender’s source, platform, or campaign context. The recipient receives a cleaner URL, and the sending user avoids inadvertently passing tracking data to contacts.

UTMBeGone operates entirely from the menu bar without a main window. It activates passively whenever a URL with matching parameters is copied, requiring no manual interaction. The developer, Fernando Bunn, does not collect any data from the app, and the full source code is publicly available on GitHub under an open-source license.

System requirements: macOS 10.15 Catalina or later.

Pricing: (Free, open-source)

Limitations: Processing happens only when a URL is copied to the clipboard, so URLs pasted from external sources already in the clipboard before launch are not retroactively cleaned. The app does not modify URLs embedded in rich text or web pages — only plain-text clipboard entries are processed. Some non-standard or proprietary tracking parameters not included in the default list require manual addition.

Alternatives: ClearURLs (browser extension for Chrome/Firefox) removes tracking parameters at the browser level before copying. Link Cleaner provides similar clipboard URL cleaning. Privacy-focused browsers such as Brave offer built-in URL sanitization for links opened directly.

Suitable for users who frequently share links from newsletters, social media, or marketing emails and want to avoid passing tracking data to their contacts without adding friction to the copy-paste workflow.
