Timebar

github.com

Displays a thin visual progress bar just below the Mac menu bar that depletes as a timer counts down. Supports preset and custom durations, customizable appearance, and runs on less than 0.1% CPU.

Timebar provides ambient countdown timers through a minimal visual element: a thin horizontal line positioned just below the menu bar. The line shortens over time, giving a persistent at-a-glance indication of elapsed time without requiring a dedicated window or dock icon.

Preset durations include 5, 15, 25, 50, 60, and 90 minutes, covering common work intervals and Pomodoro-style sessions. Custom durations can be set from 1 second to 24 hours. An optional completion sound signals when the timer ends. The bar’s thickness, color, opacity, and position are all configurable. An optional background track shows the full original bar width for contrast.

Resource usage is minimal: approximately 0.03–0.07% CPU while active. The timer state is saved when the Mac sleeps and resumes from the correct remaining time on wake. No network access, accounts, or special permissions are required.

System requirements

  • macOS 14 Sonoma or later
  • Universal binary (Apple Silicon and Intel)
  • No permissions required

Limitations

  • Visual-only; no alarm or notification beyond an optional sound
  • No task labeling or timer history
  • Minimal interface may not suit users who prefer detailed timer controls

Alternatives

  • Lungo (Freemium): Keep-awake with session tracking, no visual countdown bar
  • Flow ($4.99): Pomodoro timer with structured break management
  • Klokki Slim (Free): Time tracking with project labels

Suitable for users who prefer a lightweight, unobtrusive visual cue for time awareness during focused work sessions.
