A lightweight menu bar app for sending quick notification-style messages to friends without chat history or persistent conversations

PingBar enables sending brief, one-off messages to friends that arrive as native macOS notifications, without maintaining chat history or conversation threading. The approach resembles the old social platform “poke” feature but with actual message content.

The app operates through an invite code system. Users connect with friends by exchanging codes, then send short messages from the menu bar. Messages appear as standard macOS notifications on the recipient’s Mac. Each message exists only as a fleeting notification with no persistent archive.

Setup requires creating an account through Supabase authentication, obtaining an invite code, and sharing it with contacts. The process takes approximately five minutes. The interface maintains a minimal aesthetic throughout.

Core functionality involves clicking the menu bar icon, typing a brief message, and sending. The app operates smoothly with minimal system resource usage, reflecting the straightforward nature of its purpose.

The notification-only approach works best for quick check-ins, brief reminders, or casual “thinking of you” messages rather than substantive conversations. Without conversation history, users cannot review previously sent or received messages.

PingBar is free to download via DMG from the developer’s website. The app requires macOS with an active internet connection. Developer Artiom Gramatin maintains the project with email support available.

Requirements include proper macOS notification permissions configuration. The app’s documentation specifically addresses troubleshooting notification delivery, indicating this as a common setup consideration. Once permissions are correctly set through System Settings, notifications arrive reliably.

Limitations include the lack of message history, which may frustrate users who prefer searchable conversation records. The notification-first approach does not replace primary communication tools for substantive discussions.

Alternatives for lightweight messaging include iMessage, Telegram’s quick reply features, or Slack’s huddles for brief synchronous communication.

Suitable for users who want a minimalist way to send ephemeral, brief messages without the weight of full messaging platforms and who find the absence of message history freeing rather than limiting.
