SuperIsland is a free, open-source macOS app that repurposes the MacBook notch as a Dynamic Island-style surface for live system information and interactive widgets. The notch expands contextually when content is active, displaying media controls, status information, or calendar details without occupying menu bar space. (Free, open-source)
Built-in modules cover now-playing media from Apple Music, Spotify, and other media apps with album art and playback controls; battery status including charging progress and time remaining; a calendar countdown showing the next meeting with one-tap join links for Zoom, Google Meet, and Teams; current weather; and system HUD overlays for volume and brightness that replace the default full-screen indicators with a compact notch popup.
SuperIsland includes a JavaScript extension SDK, allowing developers to create and contribute custom modules that are reviewed and merged into the community extension store. Available extensions include WhatsApp message notifications, Linear issue updates, Pomodoro timer integration, Last.fm scrobbling, and AI agent alerts. The extension architecture means the active feature set expands over time as contributors add modules.
System requirements: macOS 13.0 Ventura or later. Requires a MacBook with a notch (MacBook Pro 14” or 16” 2021 or later; MacBook Air M2 or later). Does not support Mac desktops or external displays.
Pricing: (Free, open-source)
Limitations: Only functional on MacBooks with a physical notch; not applicable to Mac desktops, MacBook Pro models from 2020 or earlier, or MacBook Air M1. The extension ecosystem depends on community contributions and pull request reviews. Not available on the Mac App Store; requires direct download.
Alternatives: Notchmeister (paid notch customization with visual effects; no live activities), Mercury Weather (free; displays weather in the notch on newer macOS, single-purpose), built-in macOS Live Activities (limited to select compatible apps, no third-party extensibility).
Suitable for users with notch-equipped MacBooks who want to make productive use of the notch area for system information, media controls, and meeting management without additional menu bar items.
