Free open-source Apple TV remote control with keyboard shortcuts and now playing widget

Itsytv provides Apple TV remote control functionality from the macOS menu bar with full D-pad navigation, playback controls, and keyboard shortcut integration. The app enables controlling Apple TV devices over the local network without the iOS Remote app. (Free, open-source)

The remote interface includes play/pause, volume adjustment, home, menu, back, and sleep buttons accessible via menu bar or keyboard shortcuts using arrow keys, Return, Space, and Escape. Text input functionality allows using the Mac keyboard for Apple TV searches and password entry instead of navigating on-screen keyboards.

A now playing widget displays album artwork, title, artist information, and live progress bar for current media playback. The app browser lists installed Apple TV applications with direct launch capabilities from the Mac. Multi-device support enables pairing and switching between multiple Apple TVs.

Built with Swift and SwiftUI as a native macOS application with MIT licensing and publicly available source code on GitHub. All communication with Apple TV uses end-to-end encryption with pairing credentials stored securely in Keychain. No subscription, analytics, or cloud services are involved.

Distribution includes Mac App Store availability, direct GitHub releases installation, and Homebrew support for automated installation and updates.

System requirements: macOS 14 Sonoma or later for the Mac. tvOS 15 or later for Apple TV. Both devices must be on the same local network.

Limitations: Requires Apple TV AirPlay access set to “Anyone on the same network” for pairing. Menu bar icon may be hidden on crowded menu bars, particularly on MacBooks with notch displays. No official Apple remote app exists for Mac, making third-party solutions necessary.

Alternatives: iOS Remote app (requires iPhone/iPad), Apple TV app (limited playback control), physical Apple TV remote.

Suitable for users who want Apple TV control without reaching for iPhone or physical remote. Best for Mac users with Apple TV setups who prefer keyboard-driven interfaces, multi-room media control, or integrated media browsing from the desktop.
